Can you confirm the product model number as per the edit in my initial reply as some models from this period were affected by a faulty Nvidia chip. If this is not one of the models acknowledged by Sony to have a faulty Nvidia chip, and it is a graphics chip problem, then there is a possibility that a reflow may resolve the issue. Cost is approx. £120 and some companies offer a no fix no fee deal (apart from collection and return).

I suspect you are using the chassis model which is the same for all the different models in the series. Sony don't help by prominently putting the chassis model on the bottom. Try looking on the screen surround, on the original box or in Control Panel - Vaio Control Centre for the correct model - it will be an E-Series notebook starting VPCE. When you have the correct model, you can find the support pages on the support website - for example here is the support pages for the VPCEB2S1E.
